The Best Break-Up Songs of All Time

12 Sep

1. “I Know It’s Over” The Smiths. Morrissey’s specialty, self-pitying angst, expressed in its ideal format.

2. “A Little Time” The Beautiful South. The typical boy-needs-space, girl-is-angry-at-commitmentphobic-boy story with a satisfying twist at the end.

3. “The Breakup Song (They Don’t Write ‘Em Like That Anymore)” Greg Kihn Band. By far the catchiest song about a break-up.

4. “Rowboat”- Johnny Cash (also Beck). Seedy undercurrents (what exactly is the gasoline for?) make you want to listen to this one again.

5. “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover” Paul Simon. For those needing a little guidance….

Best frighteningly vengeful breakup song:

“Make Your Bed” Neko Case
