Jon Brion at Largo, LA

6 Apr

Our friends and fellow pop devotees Neumann and Liz were out from Boston this past week, and we drove down with them to LA last weekend to catch Jon Brion’s regular show at Largo on Friday. And, of course, it was amazing. We got there early and grabbed a drink (or two) at a bar next door, then headed over, and were served our dinner faster than anytime I’ve ever been there. There wasn’t an opening act, so Jon did two full sets–the first of all originals and the second, all covers. He did two full-band arrangements, looping drums first, then piano, then several different guitar parts. Neumann commented that his drumming had definitely improved since the last time he’d seen him (about three years ago). One of them, I think it was either “Girl I Used to Know” or something else, had this amazing guitar riff in it–a little pause in the frenzy of the rest of the arrangement. He was really rocking out. Maybe it’s because the Olsen twins were there.
